After submitting my revision of Shinji's story last week, I decided to read the book I borrowed from my friend, it was "The Firm" by John Grisham.
Well, it wasn't only because of how handsome and how hotshot of a lawyer and how almost perfect Mitch was why I got hooked on The Firm, it's also because of the story. I really admire how John Grisham wrote this masterpiece. He's a great story-teller; it was like I'm watching a movie when I'm actually reading the book. I don't know how to say this, but I really really love the story so much, that I keep talking about it, about Mitch, and how it affected me. You know, when I read a book and it's really good and I love the characters, their behaviors, thoughts, feelings, actions, etc etc, affects me in so many ways that I even felt as if they truly exists. There was this chapter/scene in which Mitch cheated on Abby by having a sexual affair with some local girl in Cayman Island and I was so pissed off with him! How could he cheat on his perfect beautiful wife Abby????!!!! Howww??!!!! Damn. I was glad that Mitch repented on his carelessness and he felt sick of himself cheating on Abby. And I was also glad that he didn't admit this to Abby, because you know, if I were Abby, I'm not sure if I'm ever to forgive Mitch for cheating on me. LOL
It's this book that when you turn the page, your heart is beating so fast anticipating for every scenes, for what's going to happen next, especially on the part where Mitch and Abby were running away from the firm, the mafia and the FBI. I just love how the characters were presented as if they were really existing people. You know, they were not perfect in the sense that, Mitch has this selfish attitude (I don't know how to say/explain this, you'll know when you the read the book).
I got to finish this book in 4 days, and 'til now I'm still on the 'Mitch' high. I so love the novel, that I downloaded the movie adaptation. Last Tuesday, i got to watch the movie, Tom Cruise as Mitch McDeere (I was actually imagining Tom Cruise as Mitch while I was reading the book. minus the height of course! LOL. Mitch in the novel is six-two and we all know how tall Mr. Cruise is :p). I'd say that the movie wasn't a bad adaptation, it's good but I really prefer the novel much much more. There were a lot of things to compare from the movie to the original story in the book. The movie didn't go far from the novel but there were things that were changed and I'd like to say I wasn't really satisfied. It was... uhm, Okay. They say, usually movie adaptations of stories from the books are not 100 percent similar to the original. So yeah, I can forgive that, after all Tom Cruise as Mitch McDeere was great in the movie. I wasn't just satisfied of how the ending turned out to be.
If anyone hasn't read it, I'm encouraging you to read The Firm by John Grisham. It's really a good read! I said, I'm addicted to John Grisham's books, I'm currently reading "The Runaway Jury" (which I bought at the bookstore last January but wasn't able to read until last Monday.) and when I'm done with this one, I'll read "The Rainmaker" (this is recommended by my lawyer friend) next.
